General Baby Bedding Questions & Answers

Question #1: Why is quality baby bedding important?

Babies can be expensive and parents tend to be quite shocked by all of the things a little baby needs. Many times parents will try to save money by getting cheap baby bedding, but unfortunately that means the baby will pay the price. Quality baby bedding is important because a baby's skin is very delicate and sensitive. If you skimp on baby bedding by getting a sheet set that's stiff and causes your baby's skin to get irritated then that will mean a cranky baby which creates cranky parents. So if you get a quality crib bedding set it's a win/win for both your baby and you!

Question #2: How do I select good baby crib bedding?

First thing is to select crib bedding that is made of soft material that's flame- retardant. It's also important to make sure that the bedding is machine washable and that goes for both sheets and blankets because baby's diapers can leak and babies tend to spit up at the craziest times. It's also important to make sure that the bedding is made for a crib and not for a bigger bed. Consider getting your baby bedding set from a trusted company so you know that it's made of baby-safe fabrics. When you find the baby bedding that is right for your baby, get more than one set to ensure that you always have clean sheets ready when those unplanned baby messes occur.

Question #3: Is there a difference between hypoallergenic baby bedding and organic baby bedding?

Yes, there's a big difference. If a baby bedding set is labeled as organic that doesn't mean that it's also hypoallergenic and visa-versa. The term hypoallergenic refers to bedding that has a decreased tendency to provoke an allergic reaction. This doesn't mean that there's a 100% chance that your baby won't have allergies, it just means that the fabric is most likely not going to cause allergens to reach your baby.

If a baby bedding set is labeled Organic, this means that the baby bedding is chemical free and that the fabric meets regulations set by the Organic Trade Association regarding fiber processing, production, dyeing and non-toxic handling. Check to make sure that the baby bedding is labeled with the organic certification to ensure that it's truly organic.

Question #4: Should I only get organic baby bedding for my child's crib?

Getting organic baby bedding can't hurt, but it's not a must-have for your baby. You can find sheets and blankets that are made of natural fibers such as 100% cotton or wool that might not necessarily be labeled organic, but it's still baby-safe and comfortable for your child. If you have a baby with extra sensitive skin or allergies then organic or hypoallergenic baby bedding might be the best choice.

Question #5: What are some organic baby bedding brands and hypoallergenic crib bedding brands?

Here's a list of brands that create baby bedding with your baby's optimal health in mind. Organic Baby Bedding Brands: Summer Infant, Nojo Organic, American Baby, Argington, Tad Poles and Pixel Organics. Hypoallergenic Baby Bedding Brands: Silhouette, The Baby Natura and BambooBaby.

Question #6: What should I know about crib bedding thread count?

The higher the thread count, the softer the fabric. There's no limit of baby bedding thread count that you must get for your baby, but we'd recommend getting a soft baby bedding set so your precious child gets the best sleep possible.

Question #7: Do I need to get crib bedding made for my baby's exact crib?

No, you don't need specific crib bedding made for your child's brand of crib, but you should be aware of your crib mattress dimensions. If your baby has a standard size crib mattress then you should get a baby bedding set that is standard size. If your baby has an oval, round, mini or portable crib then it's recommended that you check your exact crib mattress dimensions and look for sheets made to fit.

Baby Bedding Safety Questions & Answers

Question #8: Should I use a baby crib bumper?

We recommend that you do some research before placing a crib bumper in your baby's crib. Many Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Groups (SIDS) are recommending that parents leave the crib bumpers out of the cribs due to a possible higher risk of suffocation. Claims vary, some say don't use a bumper and others say that it's ok for certain aged babies. We recommend that you read more about the subject before making that decision.

Question #9: Can I use a blanket in the crib when my baby is little?

It's recommended that blankets not be used on little babies and to wait till your baby is big enough to roll over, incase he or she gets stuck under the blanket. If you're concerned about your baby getting cold, get your baby a sleepsack or footed nightwear.

Question #10: Should baby bedding be loose or tight?

Baby crib fitted sheets should always fit tightly to the mattress and flat sheets should be tucked in to fit snuggly around your baby. Make sure the sheet is never pulled up past your baby's chest.
